How do you know if an AI tool is useful, safe and appropriate for your evaluation or MEL project?

AI tools are now part of evaluation work, but many teams are still working out how to choose and use them safely, responsibly and well. This live masterclass offers a practical human-centred foundation for choosing and using AI in MEL work. It is designed for evaluators, MEL practitioners, and program teams who want clearer criteria for deciding when AI can add value, when it should be avoided, and how to keep professional judgement at the centre. This session spotlights three core areas for building AI into your practice with confidence:

Judging fit

weigh up whether a tool is the best, safest, and most accessible option for your project

 Setting up for success

get your tool working for you, including security settings, writing style and tone, choosing the right model, and connecting the tools and data sources you need

Keeping judgement in the loop

build AI into your workflow without letting it replace your own evaluative thinking

This is an interactive, hands-on session. You will work through MEL examples, test the assessment approach for yourself, and leave with a practical, human-centred framework you can apply to your own context. Places are limited. No prior AI experience is needed.

By the end of this masterclass, participants will be able to:

  • Judge whether an AI tool is fit for purpose
  • Assess safety for a given tool using a practical, non-technical set of criteria
  • Set a tool up for success
  • Identify where AI adds value in the MEL workflow, and where human judgement must lead instead
